The 2019 Folsom Jazz Festival wAS held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm, and WAS AN exciting day of entertainment! 

iT WAS Held on two campuses (Folsom High School in Folsom, CA and Rolling Hills Church in El Dorado Hills, CA) with over 140 middle school and high school jazz bands, vocal jazz choirs, and jazz combos competing throughout the day at this family-friendly event. This must-attend Festival is the largest jazz competition in our State!! pLEASE JOIN US FOR THE 31ST ANNUAL FOLSOM JAZZ FESTIVAL IN JANUARY 2020!

Jacam Manricks Band

Jacam Manricks and his band were the Saturday evening headline artists on the main stage in El Dorado Hills!  Jazz composer/arranger, saxophonist/woodwind player and music educator Dr. Jacam Manricks has been a highly respected figure among the New York City jazz scene for over thirteen years. Manricks has released three highly acclaimed albums as a leader to date (Labyrinth, Trigonometry and Cloud Nine) and performed as a sideman on countless other releases.  His music has been highly commended in major music magazines, websites and newspapers in the United States, Canada, France, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Australia, and New Zealand.  Manricks has given over 100 master classes on jazz composition and improvisation at internationally renowned institutions around the world and has presented fourteen international tours performing his original music with leading New York based jazz artists.

Manricks has performed with Ray Charles, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, Frank Wess, Ravi Coltrane, Don Byron, Conrad Herwig, Robin Eubanks, Frank Lacy, Lew Soloff, Alex Sipiagin, Wycliff Gordon, David Liebman, Micheal Abene, Bob Mintzer, Dick Oatts, James Morrison, Ben Monder, Ari Hoenig, Aaron Goldberg, Gary Versace, Joe Martin, Adam Rogers, Matt Wilson, Sam Yahel, Tyshawn Sorey and many more.

The Ron Cunha Big Band

Our noon concert in Folsom at the Jill Soldberg Performing Arts Center featured the Ron Cunha Big Band.  Some of the finest musicians in Sacramento play under Leader/trombonist Ron Cunha. 

The Sacramento State Jazz Singers

Our 3:00 p.m. concert featured the Sac State Jazz Singers on the choir stage in El Dorado Hills.  The vocal jazz program at Sacramento State is under the new direction of Gaw Vang Williams. Sac State Vocal Jazz are the winners of 12 Downbeat Student Music Awards!  The sounds of Sac State Vocal Jazz are influenced by the great vocal jazz groups of the past and present: The Hi-Lo's, Singers Unlimited, Take 6, New York Voices, The Real Group, Manhattan Transfer and others.

The Dave Pietro Group

The 2017 headline guest artist was the Dave Pietro Group. Dave Pietro has been on the New York music scene since 1987.   His talents as a gifted saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, and educator have made him an in-demand musician who has performed at jazz clubs, jazz festivals, schools and concert halls in more than 30 countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. He has also toured and/or recorded with the bands of Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, John Fedchock, Mike Holober, Anita Brown, Pete McGuinness, Pedro Giraudo, Jim Widner and Arturo O’Farrill. Pietro has performed with may other well known musicians such as Paul Anka, Louis Bellson, Blood Sweat & Tears, David Bowie, Bobby Caldwell, Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Harry Connick Jr., Michael Feinstein, Chaka Khan, Liza Minnelli, James Naughton and John Pizzarelli.

The John Daversa Group

The 2016 headline guest artist was John Daversa  with his renowned John Daversa Group.  Daversa’s celebrated and distinctive musical perspective has been a passport to performances on world stages such as The Today Show, Late Nite with David Letterman, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Live 8 (Berlin), Hamburg Music Festival, Java Jazz Festival (Jakarta), Monterey Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreux Festival, and the Playboy Jazz Festival.  He has also had the opportunity to perform or record with artists such as Fiona Apple, Michael Bublé, Dori Caymi, Andraé Crouch, Sheryl Crow, Bob Mintzer Big Band, and The Yellowjackets.

The Ben Wendel Group

The 2015 headline guest artist was the Ben Wendel Group.  Grammy nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel was born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Los Angeles. Currently living in Brooklyn, NY, he has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer and producer.  Highlights include multiple domestic and international tours with artists such as Ignacio Berroa, Tigran Hamasyan, Antonio Sanchez, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Snoop Dogg and the artist formerly known as Prince. Ben is a founding member of the Grammy nominated group Kneebody, currently signed with Motéma Music.

Volunteer Opportunities


The largest jazz competition in California requires a lot of volunteer support staff to run it!  Please consider working a shift or two to help us make this year the best Folsom Jazz Festival ever!  Volunteering is rewarding & fun, and volunteers receive free festival admission!
